Cottage living is a big part of Finnishness, especially in the summer, and there are an estimated half a million cottages in Finland. I have spent at least part of the summer every year of my life at my family’s cottage. As a child, it was always a highlight of a summer holiday to get to the cottage just to swim, sauna, fish and meet relatives.
Finns are often described as quiet people who value their own peace and quiet, and who love saunas. So it is no wonder that in the midst of our busy everyday lives, we like to spend a free weekend or holiday in our own peace, surrounded by a forest, by a lake, taking a sauna and swimming.
Cottages in general are not the most modern of all. For example, they may not have running water or even a traditional toilet, but rather an outdoor shed. Not all of them even have electricity, so it can be very easy to disconnect from everyday life there.
