Although the summer season is quite short here in Finland, we still want to make the most of it. If you ever meet a Finn during the summertime and ask to hangout, I bet they will say, “Oh, I’m going to our cottage to spend some time with my family, maybe next time.”
Finns really treat summer cottages like a vacation. Most cottages are located near a lake/the sea so you get to swim, sauna, grill food and enjoy the nature. Make sure to pick some wild blueberries while you’re at it. Sounds amazing right, except for the mosquitoes and other bugs that live there, too.

Some Finns may prefer a modern cottage with electricity and a proper toilet, while others like to do it the traditional way. Cottages are also perfect for family gatherings since there is plenty of space to move around and host everyone.
A huge bonus point is if the cottage is near your home, ideally just a 1 or 2-hour drive away. This means that even if you have to work during the week, you can always escape to the cottage for the weekend to unwind.
Fun fact: I’m actually writing this post right now while chilling at our summer cottage.
So, if you ever get the chance to visit a Finn’s summer cottage, do it and experience the real Finnishness.
