MEETING 1. Basic language

Learning and teaching totally different languages

In our first meeting we started with some basic aspects of the language such as letters, pronunciation and numbers. I learned Finnish and I taught Spanish.

What I learned the most about was pronunciation as Finnish letters are pronounced very differently from English. After the class I felt capable of saying some words in Finnish and also some numbers.

Actually the experience was not totally new to me as I felt as if a classmate was explaining something to me. However, what I did find difficult was explaining a language or learning it from scratch as we also had to understand each other in English. One thing that surprised me was the realisation of how difficult my language is in some respects.

I think we both reached our objectives as we only wanted to do an introduction to the languages so we kept to the timetable.
