Meeting 10: Hike

Hiking and language learning

For our 10th meeting we did something a bit different – we went on a hike. We picked Hervantajärvi to be the perfect location, as there was a nice 2 km hike to a fireplace. The forest was still a bit snowy, but the sun shined making the weather pleasant for walking. While hiking we discussed various topics and also tried to name our surroundings in German/Finnish. I explained quite a lot about Finnish nature to others, and warned them of accidents with the moose while driving here.

In the middle of our trip we reached the fireplace. We fried some sausages and marshmallows on the fire and had short discussions with others who where at the fireplace already. On the way back we also discussed about hiking culture around Europe, and I understood that hiking really plays a big part in the lives of many Germans. At the end of our meeting we agreed to keep in touch in the future and maybe meet at Wappu.

Some vocabulary I learned:

stick = der Stock

branch = der Zweig

moose = der Elch

slippery = rutschig

rocks/cliff = der Felsen
