Hello, Mate - Exchange in the UK

Cloudy Manchester

I have spent almost two semesters studying in the UK. My modules have consisted of topics such as leadership and management, ethical business, contemporary issues, and innovation.

My studies at the University of Salford have been different to my studies in Finland. Each module consists of a two-hour lecture and a two-hour seminar. Most of my assignments have been individual written reports, which was a nice change from group-focused assignments in Finland. I feel like my studies here have helped me develop academically by introducing me to a different approach to assignments and encouraging greater attention to quality of research, etc.

I have spent my spare time in the UK similarly to Finland. I have gone to the movies quite a few times. However, I also attended a speed friending event, which is something I have never done before. I share my accommodation with three guys, which has not been my favourite experience.

In comparison to Finland, I have felt that studies in the UK are more structured and formal. Teachers pay closer attention to professionalism, academic writing, report structure and referencing. Another difference is the grading system. While the official scale ranges from 40 to 100, marks above 80 are relatively uncommon and considered exceptional. It took some time to adjust to this system because a score of 70 is already classified as a first-class result although it initially didn’t seem that good.
