Finnishness

My thoughts of Finland and Finnishness.

I appreciate Finnish nature. I grew up on the west coast of Finland so having water close to me feels like home. Luckily, we have water almost everywhere because of our thousands of lakes. I’ve spent a lot of time in forests picking blueberries, hiking and playing since I was a kid. I am a fan of seasonal changes because they show all the different parts of our beautiful nature. Chilly weather and dark evenings feel really nice at after a warm and bright summer. Finnish nature is something I value and seek into, when I want to clear my head or relax and I love the fact that where ever I go in Finland, nature is close to me.

I feel free in Finland. I have had the opportunity to choose my own path when it comes to for example education. I feel safe to change my mind, express my opinions and needs. I feel free to aim for my goals. It feels natural for me to be quiet and mind my own business when ever I feel like it. I love that we clearly respect each others personal spaces in public places. All these things may feel obvious sometimes but I know I am privileged to feel like this and to live in a country like Finland.

I love traditional things, such as sauna and our exotic easter dessert, mämmi. I find our quirky sense of humor funny, and our kind of resilient, or as we call it “sisu” inspiring. I am very thankful for all these things I’ve mentioned above and for me they represent Finnishness at its best.
