Importance of nature

As you can see from the pictures I have chosen to describe my finnishness, the nature and it’s many faces is something that truly can amaze. In Finland I admire that we have four totally different seasons; summer, autumn, winter and spring. Eventhough I hate the seasons between when it’s all wet because wheather can’t decibe if it’s going to be snowy or rainy. Summer is my favourite season since then the light is all around. I love bright and warm summer nights when you can just sit outside and watch the horizon, hopefully next to a lake. For me, lake scenery is the thing. Whenever I see a lakeside, it has been a good day.

The relationship with nature must be somehow written in our Finnish dna. Not all people enjoy being all over foresty people and hanging around in isolated forest cabins or summer houses (summer house must be located next to a lake if you ask me!) but still the connection to the nature is there. In every city there is almost quite easy access to the nearest forest or at least a park. In Finland we also have this special thing called ”every man’s right” which means that anyone can walk or pick berries in any forests without a need to ask a permission if you just don’t do harm to any trees or plants. Regular visits to the forests are also healty due to the studies that shows that even a small amount of time spent in the forest starts to decrease human stress levels. Quite cheap way to take care of yourself, I’d say!

The other day I was discussing with canadian who has lived several years in Finland and the topic was how to break the ice with finns. Some of us might have kind of a iced face when being alone but when you start to talk with them they’re not (always) that icy. It coulb be still difficult to get to the deeper level. My canadian friend was wondering how to get to the next level after small talk with a finn and really get to know them. After my many thoughts of Finnish nature I have an suggestion: ask from a Finn if they would like to go for a walk in a forest with you! There’s so many national parks and trails you could choose for.
