My Experiences of Finnishness

Being a proud Finn who loves nature

First thing that comes to my mind when thinking about Finland is the nature of course. We Finns love the nature and I personally could not ever live in a big city without nature close by. It was already awful to live one year in a apartment where I couldn’t see any trees from the window. From that same apartment there was luckily only 500m to a lake and to a lots of trees. I could sit hours by the lake or sea and just watch how the water moves and listen how the waves hit the shore.

When I was choosing the destination city where I would go on exchange, there was one thing that had a quite big impact. The city must be by the sea and not inland.

So, I don’t just love nature, I need the nature.

Other things that comes to my mind is that we Finns need our own personal space and we trust each other. For example, we need our space when we are waiting for the bus and we are terrified if someone sits next to us, even if there is free space somewhere. If you come too close to us while speaking, we try to take a step back. And when going to a beach in the summer, we take our own space there and when we are going for a swim, we trust that no one will take our stuff.
