A Vietnamese loving Finland

As a Vietnamese student who has spent two years in Finland, I can share my perspective on the notion of Finland being the happiest country in the world. While it's challenging for me to definitively declare this as true or false based on my own experiences, I can certainly outline what I believe defines the essence of Finnish culture and Finnishness to me.

Finnish cuisine, while initially unimpressive compared to its European counterparts, has grown on me over time. My earliest encounters with Finnish dishes occurred in the school cafeteria, leaving me uncertain about their authenticity. At first, the flavors seemed rather one-dimensional, primarily salty, creamy, and greasy, lacking any distinctiveness. However, with each passing meal, I found myself developing an unexpected fondness.

Among the standout Finnish dishes I’ve savored is the delightful combination of smoked salmon, tender boiled potatoes, and a delectable potato salad. The simplicity of this dish is its charm, and I eagerly anticipate exploring more of Finland’s culinary offerings.

Sauna culture in Finland was a revelation for me, a far cry from what I was accustomed to back home. The sight of people baring it all in the sauna was initially perplexing and a tad embarrassing. However, I’m gradually adapting to this communal practice. What strikes me as particularly unique is how sharing a sauna with friends fosters a sense of closeness. There’s something inexplicably special about engaging in conversations, sipping on beer, all while basking in the soothing heat of the sauna.

The natural beauty of Finland is its crowning jewel. Surrounded by an abundance of parks, forests, and lakes, this country offers an unparalleled connection with nature. I vividly recall a visit to Rauhaniemi forest in August 2021 when I first arrived in Tampere. The serene ambiance and the captivating allure of nature left an indelible impression. Sitting by the tranquil lake, feeling the gentle autumn breeze rustling through our hair while music played in the background, it was a moment of pure serenity that will forever remain etched in my memory.

There’s an inexplicable inspiration that arises from wandering through Finnish forests and parks. The ever-changing colors of leaves and shifting seasons provide an endless source of fascination. The distinctiveness of the four seasons ensures that there’s always something to anticipate. In the midst of the dark and wintry days, thoughts of the vibrant spring and summer keep me excited. During the scorching summer, I yearn for the cooler atmosphere and gentle autumn rains. As autumn transitions into winter, the prospect of visiting the Christmas market becomes an eagerly awaited event on the horizon. Finland’s nature and its rhythmic seasons have a way of constantly rejuvenating my spirit and filling me with a sense of wonder.
