My experience of Finnishness

We Finns love sauna, nature, ice-hockey and going to the market to have coffee and do small talk. However, on this text I will be focusing on the negative side of Finnishness.

Alcohol is a big part of Finnishness as it is in any other culture. We Finns tend to go overboard with the alcohol and make some bad decisions. I believe many people have heard the phrase or said “Tänään vedetään perseet!” (Let’s get fucked up). Unfortunately, alcohol is often used for personal medication in order to drown one’s sorrow or help with the winter depression. I personally like to drink and get fucked up, but sometimes for the wrong reasons like many others in this country.

The past couple of years we get to read on which country is the happiest and the number one spot has gone to Finland. I think we are quite happy, but often we have trouble to express it to others without alcohol. Modesty goes a long way in apart of Finnishness but so does, not expressing emotions and feelings to another. How we act can be seen on a bus-stop, 10 meters away from another and looking to the opposite direction. It’s good to be individualistic and modest, but we should open-up a little bit more in order to know that your fellow Finn is doing ok.
