In late May, two Senior Nursing Lecturers from Tampere University of Applied Sciences, Stiina Storvik-Sydänmaa and Gitte Taulo, visited the University of Málaga in Spain. Their trip formed part of an international staff exchange aimed at strengthening collaboration and sharing best practices in nursing education and clinical care.

Stiina Storvik-Sydänmaa is a specialist in Paediatric and Neonatal Nursing, while Gitte Taulo’s expertise lies in Cardiology and Nephrology Nursing. They received a warm welcome from the faculty and international staff in Málaga.

Exploring Educational and Clinical Practices

During their visit, the lecturers held meetings with academic and clinical professionals from the university and its partner hospitals. A key highlight was a tour of the University’s Simulation Centre, offering valuable insight into how Spanish nursing students are trained using high-fidelity clinical scenarios.

Discussions with university staff covered the Spanish hospital system, postgraduate nursing education, and clinical placement models. In-depth conversations with local nurse educators and clinicians offered further perspective on practices in Nephrology and Cardiology Nursing.

Learning from Clinical Environments

Stiina visited the Neonatology Unit at Hospital Materno-Infantil, gaining valuable comparisons between Finnish and Spanish approaches to neonatal care. Meanwhile, Gitte toured the Nephrology and Haemodialysis Units at Hospital Regional Carlos Haya, deepening her understanding of patient care pathways in Spain.

The exchange concluded with strategic discussions on future collaboration, including research initiatives and student mobility opportunities. Both lecturers returned to Finland inspired by the innovative practices and genuine hospitality of their Spanish Uninovis colleagues.

This visit not only broadened their professional horizons but also laid a stronger foundation for ongoing international cooperation in nursing education and the development of healthcare professions.
