Learning how to steer processes in a sustainable manner

Students of Environmental Engineering discuss their degree choice.

Environmental engineering is a discipline that takes scientific and engineering principles to develop solutions that protect and improve the health of living organisms and protect the environment. It comes as no surprise that most of the students enrol in this degree for ideological reasons. These are individuals who value and care for the environment, and above all, they want to have the knowledge and tools to work towards creating products and solutions with environmental awareness.

“We are destroying the globe at an increasing rate! Already my first practical training took a toll on me. I worked on disposal of hazardous waste in Finland and I cannot even imagine how bad the reality is on a global level,” comments Kari Uusitalo, who left a career in sales to become an environmental engineer.

Theory put to practice, we have it all!

This bachelor’s degree offers basic and specialized knowledge needed in the world of environmental engineers. During the first two years of the studies, there is an abundance of courses from chemistry and biology, to legislative actions and report writing. On the 3rd year of the degree, the students can choose to focus on their preferred line of work for their career. They can refine their knowledge and pick courses that perfectly fit their aspirations. The advanced study modules available are Environmental Forensics and Consulting, Energy Technology and Management, Logistics and Environment, Business Management and Entrepreneurship, and Bioeconomy Products and Services.

The students seem to be specifically proud of the laboratory work done during the studies. It is the playground where they can apply the theories and information they learn. Collecting samples, running experiments, analyzing results and writing reports gives them a glimpse into the real life of an environmental engineer and offers them valuable experience. Moreover, there are opportunities to work on projects for companies to collect study credits and internship.

“During my internship in TAMK, I did the calculations for TAMK’s carbon footprint. I was very proud to do the research, analyze data and report suggestions for reducing emissions. I learnt a lot from this, and it will also look good on my CV,” exclaims Naheed Amiri-Moghal.

Thanks to the introductory science courses, this bachelor’s degree is suitable for everyone interested in the field. There is no requirement for previous knowledge or work experience. In fact, several students admitted to never have studied natural sciences prior to this degree. Some of them have even applied for this degree in their wish to re-invent their career.

“This was all new to me. I was afraid I would fail at this degree, but I am surprised and happy with my performance and new-found competences,” explains Abdulumin Barkoumi. Mumin was born in Sweden and left a marketing career in London to pursue his bachelor’s degree in TAMK.

A bright career starts here

A TAMK degree with global recognition is a great asset for the graduating young professionals. The theoretical studies combined with the hands-on lab work, give the graduates a great set of competencies to compete in the job market. Graduates can work in regional and state environmental administrations, private companies or NGOs.

“The field is so broad that we have all found a different focus for our practical training and dream job,” explains Nikolai Sladkov.

The degree is taught in English and this brings more and more internationalization into Tampere region. However, also Finnish-speakers choose this degree for its value and uniqueness. Studying in an international environment gives unique possibilities to gain confidence and improve their multicultural communications skills. During the degree, the students are asked to work in groups on several occasions. This, in addition to communications’ courses, builds competences far valuable in the professional world. The students practice in different team roles; leading or collaborative.
